Heads and Strings
A Note on Finishing
When applying a finish, apply in thin multiple coats allowing time to dry completely between coats. Also be sure to sand lightly between coats. Do not apply thick coats of varnish or oil on the drum heads. It will muffle the sound. In fact, I just put one or 2 coats of tung oil on the heads. When sanding, start with 60 grit moving to 100 grit and finish with 320 grit sandpaper.
Sad to say, Waterlox Tung Oil Finish is not sold in California due to air quality control issues. I am beginning to experiment with other finishes. Woodcraft sells a fine water based finish called General Finishes High Performance Gloss. I will try this on the body and Watco Teak Oil for the heads.
