New Concepts
This page will include new ideas regarding how to construct the snares for a cajon drum. It will also show how I set up a sanding table and a way to put a tung oil on finish the cajon. This is a work in progress. I will publish pictures and ideas as I find the time.
A New String System
The following string system uses an "I" shaped frame configuration that holds four strings radiating from top center to left and right at the bottom. Four guitar tuning gears are placed in the middle of the "I" and a simple mechanism is built enabling one to move the frame against the drum head and away giving the player a choice whether to have a snare sound or not. Here are the pictures:
Here is the completed frame inserted into the cajon.
Images of Frame
The top of the frame is attached using hinges allowing for the bottom to swing freely to be adjusted by the tension screw. Clockwise turning moves the frame against the drum head. Counter clockwise movement moves the snare string frame away from the drum head.
Drill holes for tuning mechanisms. Top four holes are for the tuning gears. The bottom is for the swing adjustment screw. Measurements are not given because each cajon is different. You may want the holes farther apart and may use a different brand tuning mechanism.

Two backing strips are added to the back in order to accommodate the hinges. I needed to have the center strip in line with the hinges to enable the unit to work properly, swinging back and forth.
